The other day, I stumbled upon some fascinating news. It turns out that certain Switch 2 games will let you plug in a USB mouse and play with it instead of using a controller or the Joy-Con’s mouse-like features. When the console arrives next month, I’m definitely going to give this a try. Not really sure why this matters, but it seems pretty cool. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like it could make gaming a bit more interesting.

Who would have thought that you could use a USB mouse to play games on the Switch 2? When the Switch 2 was announced, we found out that you can flip one of the Joy-Con controllers on its side and use it as a mouse. It’s a neat concept that could enhance the gameplay experience for RTS and RPG games on Nintendo’s upcoming console. Our buddy Kenneth Shepard got his hands on the Switch 2 and tested out the Joy-Con mouse features. He seemed pretty impressed with how well it worked, as long as you have a table and a comfy setup. But if you prefer using an actual USB mouse, it looks like that will be an option too, at least for some games on the Switch 2.

So, on May 22, Koei Tecmo dropped an official gameplay stream of Nobunaga’s Ambition: Awakening CE running on the Switch 2. Around 10 minutes into the demo, the game’s producer, Michi Ryu, whipped out a USB mouse, plugged it into the console, and started playing the game with it. According to Ryu, when you connect the USB mouse, a message pops up in the top left corner indicating that the mouse is connected. The USB mouse takes priority over the Joy-Con controller. During the demo, Ryu also showed that you can switch back and forth between the Joy-Con and the mouse as much as you want, allowing you to use both simultaneously. I reached out to Nintendo for more info on whether the Switch 2 will support USB mice and keyboards. If it does, it could make the Switch 2, launching on June 5, even more competitive with the Steam Deck. Overall, I’m pretty excited about the console supporting more control options, giving players the flexibility to choose their preferred way of playing.

I’m not really sure why this whole USB mouse thing is such a big deal, but it does add an extra layer of customization to the gaming experience. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like having the option to use a USB mouse on the Switch 2 could attract more players who prefer that setup. Who knows, maybe it will revolutionize the way we play games on consoles. One thing’s for sure, it’s always good to have more control options available. Whether you’re a fan of controllers or a hardcore keyboard and mouse player, the Switch 2 seems to cater to all types of gamers. And hey, if it means more people can enjoy gaming in their own way, then why not embrace the USB mouse feature with open arms?
