As you leave the prologue sewers in Oblivion Remastered, you’re faced with a whole bunch of nothingness. There are some ruins over yonder, a deserted dock down the hill, and right behind you, a whole city. So, where should you head next, what should you do, and why in the world should you care about delivering a necklace of all things? There’s a ton of stuff the game doesn’t bother telling you, but don’t worry, we got your back.
Level Scaling Woes and You
If you’re a newbie to Oblivion, you might not be clued in on this pretty annoying fact. The enemies in this game scale up right alongside you, which means they get stronger as you level up. It’s like they’re on some kind of workout program too. This can make for quite the challenging RPG experience, let me tell you. Luckily, the game tweaked how leveling works a bit, so now you can pump up three Attributes each time you move up a rank.
To avoid getting your butt kicked, don’t go for a completely passive playthrough. Just avoiding fights won’t cut it. Instead, mix things up with your skills. For instance, try dabbling in Mercantile and Blade. Because let’s be real, having a hidden knife up your sleeve can come in handy when you’re roaming the roads of Cyrodiil.
Sneaky Business and Fences
If you’re playing as a sneaky sneak thief who’s all about snatching stuff left and right, you’ll soon realize that selling stolen goods in Cyrodiil is a bit of a headache. Every pilfered item is labeled with a red hand, which basically screams, “illegal loot alert!” No merchant worth their salt will touch those sketchy items. So, what’s a thief to do? Well, you gotta find yourself a fence, my friend.
But don’t expect to stumble upon a fence out in the wild easily. Instead, join up with the Thieves’ Guild to unlock Ongar the World-Weary, a fence in Bruma. He’s your guy for unloading all those stolen goodies. It’s the quickest and simplest way to get a fence in the game.
Main Quest Madness and Oblivion Gates Galore
Yep, the whole prologue is the game’s way of easing you into the big story. You know, the whole destiny, political intrigue, and pesky Daedric portals wreaking havoc across the land deal. But once you step out of the sewer, all that gets pushed aside for the massive open world awaiting you. It’s like, “Hey, forget about that whole save-the-world stuff, go explore!”
But hold your horses, don’t brush off the main quest just yet (unless you want to delay those Oblivion gates popping up everywhere)! Stick to the main questline and reclaim Castle Kvatch. This mission will take you through an Oblivion Gate and into the Daedric Realm. Once you wrap that up, Oblivion Gates will start sprouting up all over the place, near major cities and even out in the boonies. These gates are great for snagging loot and leveling up, especially if you’re more of a hack-and-slash type of player.
Oblivion Remastered is out now on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Windows PCs, and Game Pass. So, hop on in and get lost in the world of Cyrodiil!
