Dreamhaven, the new game company founded by former Blizzard boss Mike Morhaime, has announced its debut game called Sunderfolk. This game is developed by the Secret Door studio, one of the two studios under Dreamhaven. Sunderfolk is a tactical game inspired by tabletop RPGs, with a unique twist of being controlled using a phone or tablet as a controller.
Players will embark on adventures in the Sunderlands, exploring different terrains, battling monsters, and interacting with interesting animal characters. The game aims to recreate the experience of a traditional tabletop game but with modern accessibility. Using your phone for tasks like inventory management and combat, Sunderfolk encourages couch co-op gameplay, resembling traditional game nights.
In combat, players will engage in turn-based battles by selecting skill cards from a deck to attack. The addition of Fate Cards each turn introduces an element of luck that can impact the effectiveness of the attacks. To succeed, players must strategize, customize their decks, and collaborate with others.
Mike Morhaime expressed his excitement about Sunderfolk, highlighting its charm, personality, and ability to create memorable moments of shared experiences among players. Chris Sigaty, the studio head at Secret Door, emphasized the team’s love for tabletop games and the desire to make such experiences more accessible to a wider audience. With Sunderfolk, they aim to offer a game that is easy to pick up yet challenging to master.
Apart from the announced platforms like Steam, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch, players can expect Sunderfolk to be released in 2025.
