EP Games, a team that includes former members of Temtem developer Crema, is working on a new game called Oppidum, which is a narrative survival game inspired by Breath of the Wild. Set to release later this year, Oppidum is a cooperative fantasy adventure game for 1-4 players set in the land of Insule. Players will embark on a journey to save the world from a powerful entity while engaging in exploration, harvesting, crafting, and fighting.
The game offers both solo and cooperative gameplay, promising an immersive experience for all players. Oppidum focuses on the narrative aspect of the survival genre, with a main story, side quests, environmental storytelling, and a diverse cast of supporting characters. Players have the freedom to explore the open world at their own pace, discover secrets hidden throughout Insule, and build and expand their own camp using resources and blueprints.
EP Games has already conducted playtests and shared a demo of Oppidum during the Steam Next Fest in February. The studio’s CEO, lead programmer, and narrative designer, Daniel Barba, previously worked on Temtem, while the art director and technical artist, Adrián Andrés, was involved in the development of that game as well. The studio’s previous releases, Queendoom and A Gummy’s Life, have been well-received despite not having a large player base.
The game’s title, Oppidum, refers to a large fortified settlement commonly associated with Celtic people in ancient times. While the title may not be immediately recognizable to all players, it reflects the concept of building and expanding a camp in the game. Players will have the opportunity to create their own oppidum as they progress through the game and work to save Insule.
Oppidum is available for wishlisting on Steam and is expected to be released sometime in 2024. The game offers a fresh take on the survival genre, combining narrative elements with exploration and cooperative gameplay.
