Former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden believes that the focus on increasing console hardware power, specifically teraflops, is not the way forward for the industry. According to Layden, the current model of continuously pushing for more powerful and expensive hardware is unsustainable. Layden, who held significant positions at Sony Interactive Entertainment before leaving in 2019, expressed concerns about the rising development costs associated with pursuing more powerful hardware. He emphasized that features like ray tracing and 8K resolution may not be practical for the majority of players, as they require specific conditions to be fully appreciated.
