In December, Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 developer Saber Interactive announced a major change for the game. Mods will no longer be allowed in public online sessions due to server instability issues. Even players without mods installed have been experiencing problems.
Game director Dmitriy Grigorenko acknowledged the positive impact of mods on the game’s longevity but emphasized the importance of ensuring a smooth and stable experience for all players. The decision to ban mods from public online sessions was based on data showing a significant correlation between mods and server stability issues. Some users even reported corrupted save files after playing with modded players.
However, this ban does not mean the end of mods in Space Marine 2. Players can still use mods in private Operations lobbies and custom Eternal War lobbies. The studio will provide an easy entry point to the backend for games with mods installed, making it easier for modders to access tools and develop mods more efficiently.
The upcoming December update for Space Marine 2 will include the Dark Angel Chapter Pack, a new enemy called the Tzaangor Enlightened, and a new PvE map set on Demerium called Obelisk. Additionally, Games Workshop confirmed that Amazon’s Secret Level series will feature an animated sequel to Space Marine 2, offering more Warhammer content for fans to enjoy.
