After coming back from a trip to Japan, I was reminded of the amazing experiences I had at the convenience stores there when I saw the trailer for InKonbini: One Store. Many Stories, a new game developed by Nagai Industries Inc. based in Tokyo. The game is a tribute to the konbinis of Japan, which are known for their delicious food offerings and unique atmosphere. InKonbini follows the story of Makoto Hayakawa, a college student who helps her aunt run a konbini in a small town.

The game, set to be released in 2025 on various platforms, is described as a meditative narrative adventure/simulation game. Players will have the opportunity to explore the daily routine of a konbini worker and discover the hidden joys of the job. The idea for InKonbini started as a Summer Project between two friends, and has now grown into a full-fledged game with a team of eight full-time employees working on it.

The game aims to capture the essence of Japanese culture, blending beauty and coziness with a hint of sadness. The developers were inspired by the concept of mono-no-aware, which refers to the bittersweet beauty of everyday things. Through InKonbini, players will experience the joy of fleeting moments and the importance of cherishing the present.

InKonbini will offer gameplay that mirrors the tasks of a convenience store employee, but the real focus is on the interactions with customers. The developers want players to appreciate the value of each encounter, as represented by the Japanese concept of ‘ichi-go, ichi-e’ – one time, one meeting. The game will not have a complex plot, but instead, it will celebrate the simple pleasures of life and the connections we make along the way.

Ultimately, InKonbini encourages players to slow down and appreciate the moments that make up our lives. The character of Makoto Hayakawa serves as a reminder to savor the present and cherish the memories we create. The developers hope that players will be inspired to take a moment to pause and reflect on the fleeting nature of life, even in the most mundane of settings like a convenience store.

In a world that is constantly moving at a fast pace, InKonbini offers a chance to step back and appreciate the beauty in simplicity. The game’s message is clear – it’s not about the destination, but the journey itself. As we navigate through life, it’s important to remember that every moment is precious, and even the most ordinary experiences can hold a special place in our hearts.
