Nintendo has finally cleared up some confusion surrounding the upcoming Switch 2 console. Despite previous indications, it turns out that the Switch 2 won’t actually support Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) on TVs. The Mario maker made sure to set the record straight in a comment to Nintendo Life, stating that VRR will only be available when playing the Switch 2 in handheld mode. This comes after an initial publication on Nintendo’s website that suggested VRR would also be possible while the console was docked.
In a surprising turn of events, Nintendo admitted that incorrect information had been initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website. The company apologized for the error and clarified that VRR support would only be available in handheld mode. This news comes as a disappointment to many fans who were hoping for VRR support while the console was docked. When asked about the possibility of adding docked VRR support in a future system update, Nintendo remained tight-lipped, stating that they had “nothing to announce” at the moment.
It seems that the lack of docked VRR support for the Switch 2 has been a hot topic of discussion recently. Digital Foundry reported on this issue in their final tech specs report just days ago, revealing that VRR is currently only a function of the internal display and not supported over HDMI. While the exact reason for this limitation is unclear, some speculate that the dock’s DisplayPort to HDMI converter may be the culprit. Nonetheless, fans are hopeful that Nintendo will address this issue in the future. All in all, it appears that Nintendo is gearing up to be the primary partner for third-party game publishers in the next console generation, with the Switch 2 projected to sell a whopping 100 million units in just five years.
