I have always found the ocean to be a source of peace and relaxation. Whether it’s watching documentaries about the vast underwater world or simply listening to the waves crashing against the shore, there’s something about the ocean that captivates me. So when I came across the Steam Next Fest demo for Cat Clean Ocean, I jumped at the opportunity to try it out and experience a few moments of tranquility amidst the chaos of daily life – and I was pleasantly surprised.

At first glance, Cat Clean Ocean may remind you of last year’s Loddlenaut, another game focused on cleaning up the ocean. However, there are some key differences between the two that set them apart. While Loddlenaut offers a more structured and guided experience, Cat Clean Ocean takes a more freeform approach, allowing players to relax and explore at their own pace. Both games have their own unique charm, but for me, Cat Clean Ocean’s laid-back vibe was particularly appealing.

In the demo, players take on the role of Tom the cat, guided by Dr. Garfield, as they work to clean up Brightwater Bay, one of six regions on the polluted map. Using a combination of a net and vacuum, players must clear the ocean of litter and pollution to create a safe environment for marine life. Vacuuming up the pollution and watching the ocean transform before my eyes was oddly satisfying, reminiscent of peeling off the plastic film from a new phone.

Aside from the cleaning tools, players can also recycle trash they collect, unlock new tools at research stations, and keep an eye on pollution levels with the area radar. However, players must be mindful of Tom’s oxygen levels, which deplete as he cleans. Oxygen stations are scattered throughout the area to replenish his supply, adding a strategic element to the gameplay.

While Cat Clean Ocean gently touches on the issue of ocean pollution, it doesn’t overwhelm players with heavy-handed messages. By providing information about the trash players collect and its impact on the environment, the game encourages reflection on real-world environmental issues in a subtle way. I hope the full game expands on this aspect while maintaining its relaxing gameplay experience.

Overall, Cat Clean Ocean’s demo offers a soothing and immersive experience that serves as a welcome escape from the stresses of everyday life. As someone who appreciates the calming influence of the ocean, I found myself drawn to this game and its message of environmental conservation. I look forward to the full release and the opportunity to continue exploring and cleaning up the virtual ocean.
