Amazon’s God of War TV show, which has been in development, is facing a rebooting process after two years of its initial announcement. The show has experienced a setback as the showrunner and head producer have left the project, leading to a decision to take the existing scripts in a new creative direction.

The departure of showrunner Rafe Judkins and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus has been reported by Variety. Despite having multiple completed scripts, both Sony and Amazon have decided to shift the direction of the planned show, resulting in a complete reboot of the project. The show was first teased in 2022 with a promise to stay true to the popular PlayStation games, particularly the critically-acclaimed God of War Ragnarök released that year. Although Cory Barlog, the director of the game, remains an executive producer, the rest of the creative team is no longer attached to the project.

The project faced challenges despite the success of HBO’s The Last Of Us adaptation, which is gearing up for its second season in 2025. Additionally, a Horizon Zero Dawn TV adaptation for Netflix has also encountered difficulties, with reports of the removal of Steve Blackman due to toxic behavior earlier this year. The status of the Horizon Zero Dawn project at Netflix remains uncertain as of now.

Despite these setbacks, Sony remains undeterred in its transmedia ambitions. The company has already announced plans for Ghost of Yotei, a successor to Tsushima that has not yet been released. The samurai gaming story is expected to have at least one movie and other spinoffs in the future.

The God of War TV show reboot signifies a fresh start for the project, with new creative direction and potential changes to the existing scripts. It remains to be seen how this reboot will impact the overall development and reception of the highly-anticipated adaptation. Fans of the God of War franchise will be eagerly awaiting updates on the progress of the show as it moves forward in its new direction.
