We’ve come to the end of the coverage of Game Informer’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard cover story as we gear up to launch our upcoming exciting issue. However, there is one last feature that I am excited to share, focusing on Bellara Lutara, the Dalish elf and a member of the new Veil Jumpers faction in the game. During my visit to BioWare’s office in Edmonton, Canada earlier this year, I had the opportunity to explore the game’s extensive character creator, its in medias res prologue, and the initial mission that follows the prologue.

While BioWare unveiled a detailed look at Veilguard’s prologue through a 20-minute gameplay trailer last month, they have been relatively silent about the subsequent mission where players meet and recruit their first companion, Bellara. Through my interviews with the team’s leads, such as game director Corinne Bushce, creative director John Epler, and BioWare general manager Gary McKay, I gathered valuable insights about this unique elven mage.

Bellara’s Characterization and Combat Abilities

Talking with various BioWare leads, it is evident that there is a profound affection for Bellara as a character. Described as energetic, effervescent, and academic, Bellara stands out as a companion with a dynamic personality. McKay expressed his admiration for Bellara’s character and the collaborative effort that went into bringing her to life across different aspects of game development.

Bushce shed light on Bellara’s combat skills, highlighting her versatility as a mage capable of supporting allies and unleashing elemental attacks. From using electrically charged arrows to casting spells that manipulate time and heal allies, Bellara offers a range of strategic options in battles. Players can tailor her abilities to suit their preferred playstyle, whether focusing on support spells, electrical damage, or unleashing devastating attacks on enemies.

Bellara’s Role in Thedas and the Veilguard Narrative

Epler, responsible for writing Bellara’s character, delved into her significance within the world of Thedas, emphasizing the elves’ historical oppression and their connection to magic. As a member of the Veil Jumpers faction, Bellara embarks on a quest to uncover the lost history of the elven people, seeking to understand their past and secure a future for her kind in a world where ancient gods have returned.

The contrast between Bellara’s optimistic demeanor and Solas’s tragic outlook provides a compelling narrative dynamic. While Solas grapples with guilt and a somber past, Bellara confronts her own tragedies with resilience and a determination to move forward. Her character arc promises layers of complexity, revealing moments of doubt and pain beneath her sunny exterior.

Voice of Bellara and Additional Details

Jee Young Han, known for her roles in various productions including Perry Mason and Unprisoned, will voice Bellara in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The casting choice adds further depth to the character, promising a captivating performance that aligns with Bellara’s multifaceted personality.
