Ubisoft Montreal, the studio behind Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, is reportedly developing a new social simulation game called Alterra. This game is said to be inspired by Animal Crossing and will feature building elements similar to those seen in Minecraft. The project is being led by former Gotham Knights creative director Patrick Redding.
According to reports from Insider Gaming, Alterra has been in development for about 18 months. The game is said to have evolved from a previous Ubisoft Montreal project that was canceled after four years of work. Alterra will focus on voxel creation and will allow players to build and create items using resources found in the game world.
In Alterra, players will inhabit a home island populated by NPCs called Matterlings. These characters are described as being similar to Funko Pop figures, with large heads and designs inspired by both real-world and fictional creatures. The game will feature different biomes with specific resources, enemies, and materials. For example, there will be an ice biome where players can create objects using snow and ice.
The social aspect of Alterra will allow players to encounter other players in the game world. Ubisoft veteran Fabien Lhéraud is serving as the lead producer on the project, and the game is expected to launch in a few years.
While Ubisoft’s release schedule is unclear, the publisher has confirmed that a new Rayman project is in the works. Additionally, Beyond Good & Evil 2 and the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake are still in development. Ubisoft recently launched its first blockchain game featuring NFT figurines with prices reaching up to £50k.
Overall, Alterra promises to be an exciting new addition to Ubisoft’s lineup, combining elements of Animal Crossing and Minecraft in a unique and innovative way. Fans of social simulation games and building games will likely find Alterra to be a compelling and engaging experience when it finally launches.
