Valve recently released a documentary showcasing never-before-seen footage of the canceled project Half-Life 2: Episode 3. The documentary features concept art and gameplay prototypes, with developers discussing the development of Episode 2. It was revealed that Episode 3 was put on hold as the team shifted focus to work on Left 4 Dead.

Developer David Speyre mentioned that the team had to dedicate their efforts to shipping Left 4 Dead, causing Episode 3 to be sidelined. The tight shipping schedule of Left 4 Dead meant that by the time they considered going back to Episode 3, it was deemed too late. The decision was made to create a new engine for the continuation of the Half-Life series.

The documentary also delves into specific details such as weapon design, including an ice gun that could be used for various purposes in the game. Despite this, Valve boss Gabe Newell admitted that his personal failure was a factor in Episode 3 never coming to fruition. He expressed that pushing the story forward was a challenge he couldn’t overcome.

Newell mentioned that without the Episodes, sequels like Portal 2 or Left 4 Dead 2 may not have been developed, and even Dota may not have existed. The lessons learned from working on the Episodes contributed to the creation of other successful games like Team Fortress 2.

The full documentary is available online for fans to watch, along with a special anniversary update for Half-Life 2, which includes commentary, Episodes 1 & 2, and more. Additionally, Valve has made the game free to keep for a limited time to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Half-Life 2.
